Australians have spent a staggering $2 billion dollars on air conditioning alone this summer.

Researchers at consumer comparison website Finder have discovered that 69 per cent of households turned on the air-conditioning, for an average of six hours a day.

Depending on where you live and which power company you use, you could be paying around $120 dollars too much each quarter.

“The average amount spent per summer is about $300,” says Graham Cook from Finder.

It might not sound like much, but that’s on top of your other energy costs.

So how can you slash your energy costs?

1. Watch the temperature

“Increase the thermostat temperature - every degree is about 10 per cent in savings,” Cook says.

The ideal range for cooling in summer is 25 to 27 degrees. The higher the temperature, the bigger the savings.

2. Get smart with tech

Smart devices allow you to control your air conditioning from your phone, meaning you’ll never forget to turn it off.

3. Use an energy calculator

Audit your appliances and energy usage with an energy calculator, usually available through your provider or on the Energy Rating website.

4. Switch providers

According to Finder’s research, you can save between $70 and $120 just be shopping around energy providers.

“Beware of discounts offered by providers...sometimes those prices will be inflated and are discounting from those inflated prices,” Cook says.
